South Africans React To SABC's AFCON 2023 Coup On SuperSport (Multichoice)
The South African sports landscape is in upheaval, as if an earthquake has just struck it. The sports world is coming to terms with the fact that SuperSport (parent company = Multichoice) will not be broadcasting the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations starting on Saturday, 13 January in the Ivory Coast.
Instead, and one cannot stress this hard enough, SABC Sport will SHOCKINGLY be broadcasting the tournament where Bafana Bafana will make a welcome return after missing the 2021 event in Cameroon. SABC News gleefully reported that it will air all 52 matches of the 34th edition Africa's showcase footballing event.
Naturally, the amazing, unforeseen and life-altering news caused a buzz for the ages on social media, whether it was skepticism or joy. We have selected a few choice quotes related to this development.
@kabelomolekwa said: "Dear fellow South Africans, please, let us pay our TV license. What SABC did to us is really massive. It's only R265 per year. They deserve something after the comeback they did to Multichoice."
@MaphangaSamkelo said: "So Dr Motsepe said 'fuck you, Multichoice. My people can watch CAF games for free."
@Sgadi28 said: "Xa sithethela phantsi without any trolling, those fellows and ladies at Multichoice know that it's their own internal happenings that has led them to not having rights to air AFCON matches."
@Ta_Fitty said: "I don't have the data to back this up so I will lie like Fanie. I think the majority of people keeping the lights on at Multichoice is us sports people."
@lannisomething said: "Ending that Multichoice reign... I'm in love with it."
In addition to this coup, the SABC will also broadcast ALL AFCON 2025 Qualifiers, CHAN 2024 matches, remaining CAF Champions League 2023/24 matches, 2024 CAF Womens Cup of Nations matches and CAF Super Cup 2024 matches.
Incredible.
